Opportunity: Every year there is about 37,000 crash-related fatalities in the US due to various of reasons.
- The who: Car drivers in the United States.
- The what: People driving can be victims of a car crash at any time.
- The why:People not being to react quickly enough to prevent an accident or not paying attention to the road.
Testing the who: Anyone who drives regardless if whether they are outside of the US face this problem as anyone can be subject to a car crash regardless of how safe of a driver they are.
Testing the what: People who have an impairment or disability that would increases the risk of a car crash would especially need it but there has to be features in case someone makes a fatal mistake that could end up with bad consequences.
Testing the why: People not paying attention to the road and/or people not reacting quick enough could cause this. But a variety of reasons can be the cause of a car crash but a way to provide autonomous communication between cars whether it be a car that can drive itself or just cars interacting with other could be a good use since the cars would know its surroundings and work as a group to prevent accidents from happening.
Interview 1:
- This interview is with a male college student who drives at home but not at Gainesville. He states that the need can be applied for every driver. He believes for autonomous communication between cars to work there would need to be safety certifications to make sure it works correctly without causing crashes or harm. He also believes there should be a common language if used with all car companies so they different models of cars can communicate with any brand car. He also believes that crashes happen because unaware of surroundings and have lapses of focus and states that machines can be a 2nd pair of eyes that could help them since computers are more consistent as he states.
Interview 2:
- This interview is another with a male college student who keeps his car at home. For commercial reasons he believes it applies to everyone but it is especially need for drivers that are disabled. He believes that there would need to be databases for which the cars would be run through a network so traffic could flow smoothly. He also believes that crashes happen for a variety of reasons such as one being people sleeping on the road and provides no further ideas to prevent it just agreeing with the idea of autonomous communication.
Interview 3:
- This interview is with another freshman college student with his car. He states that the need is for everyone since crashes can happen to anyone but specifically younger and older people have higher chances of driving due to less experience and the quality of their senses may decrease with age. He believes that instead of autonomous communication that they shouldn't increase the driving age to 21 and have a limit at age 60. Also they should have vision and hearing tests that are difficult to help improve safety on the road due to people with disabilities. He also believes that accidents happen because young people lack experience and their decision making abilities are more audacious and for old people their senses and brain aren't working optimally so they are more likely to crash.
Interview 4:
- This interview is with a nonchalant freshman college student who drives at UF. He believes that the need applies to everyone since any driver is at risk to it. He also states the people with disabilities and people who lack concentration sometimes on the road can be a cause of the crashes and that the autonomous communication for cars would be a good idea. He just agrees with the idea and provides no alternatives to the issue.
Interview 5:
- This interview is from a male college student who drives in Puerto Rico. He believes the need would be just for congested areas since there is more traffic. He believes that crashes happen because of bad driving skills and not being aware of their surroundings. He believes the issue of reducing crashes by implementing cameras on the cars to help the cars communicate with each other as they would be able to see their surroundings.
What do you know about the opportunity that you didn't know before:
I realized from the interviews since designing and implementing autonomous cars that can communicate with each other could be quite expensive and can take a bunch of time to design and implement. As a result I realized there are other ways that don't require technology such as using regulations and tests instead which could help reduce the number of crashes on the street.
