7A - Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

Need for Autonomous Communication Between Cars
Opportunity: Every year there is about 37,000 crash-related fatalities in the US due to various of reasons.

• The who: Car drivers in the United States.
• The what: People driving can be victims of a car crash at any time.
• The why:People not being to react quickly enough to prevent an accident or not paying attention to the road.

Testing the who: Anyone who drives regardless if whether they are outside of the US face this problem as anyone can be subject to a car crash regardless of how safe of a driver they are.

Testing the what: People who have an impairment or disability that would increases the risk of a car crash would especially need it but there has to be features in case someone makes a fatal mistake that could end up with bad consequences.

Testing the why: People not paying attention to the road and/or people not reacting quick enough could cause this. But a variety of  reasons can be the cause of a car crash but a way to provide autonomous communication between cars whether it be a car that can drive itself or just cars interacting with other could be a good use since the cars would know its surroundings and work as a group to prevent accidents from happening.

Interview 1:

• This interview is with a male college student who drives at home but not at Gainesville. He states that the need can be applied for every driver. He believes for autonomous communication between cars to work there would need to be safety certifications to make sure it works correctly without causing crashes or harm. He also believes there should be a common language if used with all car companies so they different models of cars can communicate with any brand car. He also believes that crashes happen because unaware of surroundings and have lapses of focus and states that machines can be a 2nd pair of eyes that could help them since computers are more consistent as he states.

Interview 2:

• This interview is another with a male college student who keeps his car at home. For commercial reasons he believes it applies to everyone but it is especially need for drivers that are disabled. He believes that there would need to be databases for which the cars would be run through a network so traffic could flow smoothly. He also believes that crashes happen for a variety of reasons such as one being people sleeping on the road and provides no further ideas to prevent it just agreeing with the idea of autonomous communication.

Interview 3:

• This interview is with another freshman college student with his car. He states that the need is for everyone since crashes can happen to anyone but specifically younger and older people have higher chances of driving due to less experience and the quality of their senses may decrease with age. He believes that instead of autonomous communication that they shouldn't increase the driving age to 21  and have a limit at age 60. Also they should have vision and hearing tests that are difficult to help improve safety on the road due to people with disabilities. He also believes that accidents happen because young people lack experience and their decision making abilities are more audacious and for old people their senses and brain aren't working optimally so they are more likely to crash.

Interview 4:

• This interview is with a nonchalant freshman college student who drives at UF. He believes that the need applies to everyone since any driver is at risk to it. He also states the people with disabilities and people who lack concentration sometimes on the road can be a cause of the crashes and that the autonomous communication for cars would be a good idea. He just agrees with the idea and provides no alternatives to the issue.

Interview 5:

• This interview is from a male college student who drives in Puerto Rico. He believes the need would be just for congested areas since there is more traffic. He believes that crashes happen because of bad driving skills and not being aware of their surroundings. He believes the issue of reducing crashes by implementing cameras on the cars to help the cars communicate with each other as they would be able to see their surroundings.

What do you know about the opportunity that you didn't know before:  

I realized from the interviews since designing and implementing autonomous cars that can communicate with each other could be quite expensive and can take  a bunch of time to design and implement. As a result I realized there are other ways that don't require technology such as using regulations and tests instead which could help reduce the number of crashes on the street.

6A- Identifying Opportunities in Eonomic & Regulatory Trends

Regulatory Change: Amending laws to encourage small business innovation

• I believe this bill could help small business and help promote more small businesses from starting up or to innovate after seeing.
• After reading the bill and seeing the laws they were amending laws with respect to the SBIR and STTR program allowed me to see this opportunity.
• I believe small businesses and entrepreneurs starting a business will benefit as they are encouraged to use the STTR and SBIR and more people will be able to apply for these programs.
• I think it will be easy to exploit participation for previous participants who couldn't get into the programs before.
• I saw this belief because i know starting a business can be confusing and complicated and some people may not know where to start or miss some things since I almost did that before my dad started to help me start a business. As a result, I saw this opportunity since I know it could help people especially money wise with the SBIR and STTR programs.

Regulatory Change: 70% tax on the wealthy for "Green New Deal"

• I found this bill by seeing the 70% tax and how it would be to support the green new deal.
• I believe this opportunity exists due to the numbers and examples of how it could work and how much money it could provide to the government.
• The customers would be green businesses and other businesses who help battle climate change as the money would be going towards them.
• I believe it would be an easy opportunity to exploit since the Green New Deal would provide money to companies whose focus are on preventing climate change.
• I saw this opportunity because I realized if a business made a startup to help prevent climate change by doing anything then they could prob get money to help get it going from the green new deal.

Economic Trend: New Alternatives for Timber

•  I found the opportunity since there would be a reduced supply for timber but an increase in demand for wood products in the housing market and in China.
• I believe this opportunity exists since the demand would be high for wood products and as a result, a new alternative would be needed such as fake wood or a material that is like wood.
• The most likely customers would be the people who buy wood products as they can something that is just like wood so their expectation wouldn't change but it would look like the real thing.
• It would be difficult to exploit because you would have to make a new alternative to wood and if there isn't one already then you would have to spend time on making one.
• I saw this opportunity because I remember hearing about fake wood one day and I realized if there is a decrease in timber supply then why not use fake wood to satisfy the increase in demand.

Economic Trend: Agriculture and Winery Growth in San Joaquin County

• I found the opportunity since the county is very agricultural in terms of economy and there is strong demand for their products.
• I believe that this existed since the opportunities for winery growth and agriculture processing is promising since the demand is still strong.
• The prototypical customer would be people who buy wines or any agricultural products.
• The opportunity would be difficult to exploit since you would have to raise money to build up the infrastructure for these businesses.
• I saw this opportunity since my dad always tells me to get into the industries that would be booming in the future such as aerospace. As a result, if the agriculture economy is growing it would make sense to take advantage of this opportunity.

Jupiter woman killed in wreck known for work with families

• Story:  Abbie Rosemeyer, from Jupiter, died in a car accident after she crashed into a tractor-trailer on State Road 80 after the truck tried to turn onto a road.
• Problem: Humans not being able to react quickly enough to prevent accidents from happening either by braking or getting out of the way and that humans are capable of not noticing things or making mistakes which could cause accidents.
• Who has the problem: Anyone who drives is at risk since humans aren't perfect human beings and are capable of making mistakes. 

Homeless woes persist downtown At last count the city had 434 homeless people, about 38 of them downtown

• Story: Susan Landeryou, a 70 year old lady, was walking downtown in West Palm Beach with her dog when out of nowhere a homeless man comes out of nowhere and steals the dog. Luckily, someone chased down the homeless man who eventually let the dog go. However the residents of West Palm Beach are starting to complain about the homeless people as they are having similar incidents with sketchy homeless people and they are constantly around pestering residents. With a homeless population of 434 the city has been attempting to lead the homeless to services that could help them instead of letting them be and arresting them when they do something illegal.
• Problem: The overwhelming homeless population is becoming more of an issue are they are everywhere pestering people, committing crimes or being an eye sore in public places as for example, washing themselves in fountains. As a result the resident have become fearful and frustrated.
• Who has the problem: All the residents of West Palm Beach face this problem they experience altercations with the homeless every day as a result of residing in the area. The City and also business owners face this issue as the homeless commit crimes and hassling people that such as customers at a restaurant for example or even people driving around the city.

Federal oversight of Everglades still needed, groups say Water district board voted in November to seek end to order

• Story: The Everglades due to past events still requires a lot of work to restore it. However, the South Florida Water Management District wants to end a court order that requires them to clean polluted water before it reaches the Everglades. As a result multiple groups are against this would pollute the everglades and cause multiple issues for people living south of the everglades.
• Problem: The South Florida Water Management District wants to end a court order that would end up polluting the Everglades as a result of its termination.
• Who has the problem: Anyone living south of the Everglades would be affected since the water that goes to them would be polluted creating a need to create more water treatment centers of for more ways to purify the water for the cities of South Florida who utilize the clean water.

Elementaries feel pinch of teacher shortage

• Story: Florida's public schools have a shortage of teachers as they have numerous districts that need around a hundred or more openings for teachers for various subjects.
• Problem: There is a vast amount of vacancies for school teachers in schools districts all over Florida which in total amount to around 2,000 vacancies.
• Who has the problem: Public schools face this issue as they become understaffed due to the lack of teachers and as a result has their teaching methods affected as less teachers means more overcrowded classrooms which may affect the effectiveness of teaching.

Parts of county issued severe designation at risk of crop damage, water shortages

• Story: Severe drought has reached southeast Florida due to a lack of tropical systems in the past year and as a result can cause damage to crops and pastures.
• Problem: The drought can cause damages to crops and pastures resulting in a shortage of food and materials that results from those crops and pastures.
• Who has the problem: The farm owners and pasture owners as their cash flow will decrease due to the decrease in their crops and animals. As a result the food companies suffer as the amount of food decreases  as a result of crops dying and same for the animals.

4A-Forming An Opportunity Belief

I have a belief that an opportunity might exist with SNAP since you have to plan ahead when you want to order a SNAP or that it can sometimes take a while for it to arrive or to get to their destination.

The unmet need is that people who have to get to the other side of campus for an appointment or a scheduled event after 6:30 p.m. and doesn't want to pay for an uber or doesn't want to walk there which would cause them to leave even earlier, resort to SNAP. SNAP can take a while to come sometimes and even takes longer to get to their destination so it's not the best of solutions. The people who have this need are the students who utilize this service to get across campus. The need has always existed ever since uber and left come around and people need to be picked up at certain times so they can arrive at their destination on time but Uber and Lyft requires money while SNAP is free to students. People and companies such as Uber and Lyft are addressing the need by allowing customers to set up scheduled pickup times that they can set up days ahead. At this point, I believe that 80% that this opportunity exists since students who have appointments would utilize SNAP if you can set up scheduled pickup times since it would be a cheaper alternative then Uber or Lyft.

2. Male freshman student who barely uses SNAP and has a car
• Exact nature of the need: "In case of emergency when I'm running late for whatever I have to go to."
• When do you become aware of the need (Do they experience the need all the time or only sometimes): "I only experience it sometimes whenever I use it
• How long have you had the need: "Since college started."
• When did you first become aware of the need and why: "When i first used it and it took a while to arrive."
• How are you currently addressing your need? "I just use my car instead"
• How satisfied are you with your solution? "So freaking satisfied."
3. Male Freshman student who used SNAP a lot in the fall but not anymore.
   • Exact nature of the need: "All i reuire is that i get picked up and dropped off n my destination at a timely manner."
   • When do you become aware of the need (Do they experience the need all the time or only sometimes): "When they don't arrive in a timely manner. I only expereince it sometimes"
   • How long have you had the need: "Since the beginning of the year"
   • When did you first become aware of the need and why: " At the beginning of the year and because the snap took too long to get to the destination,"
   • How are you currently addressing your need? "Not using SNAP anymore"
   • How satisfied are they with their solution? "Pretty satisfied."

Reflection: What I learned about my opportunity is that the problem isn't really about scheduled pickups but more about not having enough SNAP buses around to decrease the waiting and arrival time. Some, however, chose to either stop using the service or just use their car instead.

Summarize: Not much of my original opportunity is still there since the problem is more about the insufficient amount of SNAP buses in the area and less about scheduled pick up times. I believe the new opportunity is more accurate since if the number of SNAP buses increased then the times would decrease and be much faster. Entrepreneurs should 'adapt' their opportunities based on customer feedback but only if there is a bunch of complaints that reveal the issue. If one customer has a complaint it shouldn't be an issue because that person could just be a negative person so if a whole bunch complain then it's a real issue. Also if you adapt to customer feedback you can keep the customers as you will satisfy them as you adapt.

3A-Your Entrepreneurship Story

I was exposed to entrepreneurship when I started watching Shark Tank as they had multiple entrepreneurs come and try to convince the sharks to invest in their business. I would see different kinds of people and companies and what they did right and what they did wrong. I watched the show because it was interesting to see the ideas people come up with and seeing how it turns out later on.

I enrolled in ENT 3003 because I need it to obtain a minor in entrepreneurship and I thought it looked interesting. I hope to get out of the class to learn more about entrepreneurship and learn more about starting up a business. The reason is that I’m trying to start a clothing company during the spring semester and hopefully, the things I learn in this class can help me for later on in life and for right now as well.

2A-Bug List

1. There is always medium to heavy traffic around the afternoon on any street  
•  It's a college town so they are a lot of students driving around and also adults driving back from work.
2. The blinds don't fully cover the window allowing light to come into the room.
• There is a small crack between the blinds that allow light to come in and maybe was cheaper than curtains.
3. Elevators sometimes don't work in Beaty.
• They people won't know its working until it breaks down and since it's constantly being used they can't check up on it all the time.
4. Student Rec is always crowded around 12 pm.
• As students have later classes it's probably more ideal to workout early so they can have time at night to study and do homework.
5. SNAP starts at 6:30 pm and not earlier
• It's a nightly safety and transportation service so it would make sense they do it at night since that's when it gets dark out and possibly dangerous to walk home by themselves at that time.
6. The bathrooms at bars or clubs are disgusting
• Since they are always lines for the bathrooms or there's a big amount inside they don't have time to clean it during the hours they are open.
7. I have to pay to cancel my uber even if I just ordered it
• They account for the driver having to start driving in the direction of where the pickup location was set before it was canceled.
8. Too many people handing things at Turlington
• It's the place with most traffic so if someone wanted to spread information to the most people it would be ideal to set up there and promote whatever they do.
9. The lines for food at Hub are crowded especially around 12
• Since the Hub is in the center of campus and people will be going in between class or before class to get food that would explain the crowding.
10. SNAP sometimes takes a long time to get to their destination
• They probably don't have a lot of cars since they only cover the UF campus and due to the number of people ordering and driving them there, it would take a while to get to destinations.
11. The sidewalks are cracked or uneven in many places around UF and it's difficult to skateboard around campus without falling.
• It probably costs a lot of money to fix the sidewalks and it would disrupt walking traffic as people would have to find different routes.
12. Student Rec doesn't have enough equipment for the number of people that go there.
• Due to the amount of limited space, they couldn't place a lot of equipment in such a confined space.
13. Sometimes there aren't enough seats in a class.
• Due to the number of limited spaces in classes, they won't have enough seats for everyone especially if they add more spots for people that need the class.
14. Not able to start LAN servers for games on school wifi
• It's probably a safety issue since if you start it then anyone would be able to join and it might cause problems.
15. TA office hours are during class hours so its impossible to go unless you skip class
• TA's probably have certain hours due to the classes they have so they probably have to find a time when they're free.
16. They closed the road next Reitz Union North Lawn and it takes me longer to go to class since I have to take a different route
• They're making the new engineering building and they have to make new walkways to the building and close of areas for the construction equipment to come in.
17. The swimming pool at Broward is closed for Spring
• Due to the weather conditions and it being cold out, they close since the water would be too cold.
18. Sometimes the food at Broward isn't that great
• Since they have to make food in bulk they probably choose quantity over quantity
19. Having early classes can make us lose sleep due to waking up early.
• The amount of work for classes can be a lot so having to stay up nights doing homework can take a toll on someone especially if they don't do homework during the day
20. The basketball courts at broward close at 9 when the gym closes at 10.
• It probably costs more to keep the lights on for another hour when not that many people will be at the courts around that time.

Reflection: I had challenges coming up with the list since I had to think of stuff that first comes up in my mind and then after I was stuck. Then I had to think more in depth of everything I did that could be a bother or a slight inconvenience to me so thinking of the rest took up some time. I didn't find it that difficult it was just a little hard at the end trying to think of the rest of the bugs since i hard to think hard about what i did everyday and where i went and what i saw.
